Weight Loss May Improve Fatty Liver Disease

According to a post in Science Daily, researchers recently discovered that weight loss is tied to improvement in a specific type of fatty liver disease called NASH. NASH is characterized by excessive body fat, which causes inflammation and damage to the liver.

Researchers discovered that a reduction in body fat by at least 9% improves fatty liver disease. Doctors are excited about this information because it provides them with a concrete goal to pass on to their patients. Now, instead of telling a patient to simply lose weight, they can now say, “lose at least 9% of your body weight, and your health will improve.”

Those patients who undergo a surgical weight loss procedure, such as gastric bypass surgery, can expect to lose 50-60 percent of excess body weight with proper exercise and care after surgery.
