Four Things to Do Post-Lap Band® Surgery

You’re looking and feeling great after your LAP-BAND® surgery, but what do you have to do post-lap band surgery? Here are four great things to you need to do after your bariatric surgery to ensure continued success.

  1. Regulate

Prior to and following bariatric surgery, LAP-BAND® patients must undergo an intensive, carefully regulated diet. Your surgeon and/or nutrionist will work with you to design a specific nutrition plan that must be followed. The first few days after surgery will require you to follow a clear liquid diet. A strict diet will be required the following weeks until you and your new stomach get acquainted. LAP-BAND® diets typically include a daily intake of 50 to 60 grams of protein, vegetables, salads, and meats. Eating small bites slowly and carefully is key to your diet.

Caffeine lovers will have to beware as caffeine is not allowed for the first three months post-surgery; carbonated beverages are not recommended at any time for patients as well. Other restrictions include fruit and vegetable seeds and skins, spicy foods, fried foods, and certain spices.

Consequences of derailing from your diet may cause complications that may require further surgery such as band erosion or slippage.

  1. Exercise

Your LAP-BAND® will definitely help you lose the weight, but it can’t do all of the work for you. Exercise should be a part of your daily regimen to help maintain your weight or promote further weight loss. Walking, swimming, and other aerobic activities tend to be the best for patients. 30 minutes of daily physical activity is recommended.

  1. Support

Whether it be behavior therapy or support groups, talking to other LAP-BAND® patients and can be a helpful and motivating experience.

Use support groups or forums to share your success stories can help others succeed and find out about other successful methods that other patients have implemented.

Ask your Houston bariatric surgeon or your local surgeon about local LAP-BAND® support groups. You can also find plenty of support discussion boards and forums online, too.
