7 Lap Band Myths
During my Internet searches, I found some answers to Lap Band myths.
Myth #1: Lap Band is an “easy” way to lose weight
From what I have read, Lap Band is not just an “easy” way to lose weight. It is a commitment you have to make to change your life for the better. It is for people like me who have tried diets and exercise and nothing seems to help. It might be hard, but it is worth it because it is the safe way for obese people to successfully lose the pounds.
Myth #2: The surgery prevents proper nutrition
Not true. You have to follow the doctor’s orders on this one by taking vitamins and supplements after surgery. You can still get proper nutrition, but since your stomach is restricted, you have to change the way your body used to get your daily vitamins and minerals.
Myth #3: Even if you lose the weight, you will gain it back
I have read that this is not true. If you make the commitment to lose the weight and change your old bad eating habits, you will of course lose the weight. If you continue to eat like you used to, then your chances of losing a lot of weight decreases. Besides, I don’t think so many people would get the surgery if the weight didn’t stay off.
Myth #4: The surgery results in unhealthy rapid weight loss
Weight loss doesn’t occur overnight, that just wouldn’t be healthy. You will lose about 2-3 pounds a week, which is more than I have ever lost on any diet. And of course it will depend on what you weigh now.
Myth #5: You will have to eat only a liquid diet
You won’t have to be on a liquid diet forever! That’s only when you are recovering from the surgery. Of course you shouldn’t continue to eat the supersized fast food meals like before, but you can eat smaller portioned meals. The idea is to eat solid foods, three times a day and that the smaller amount will give you a full feeling.
Myth #6: The follow-up care is not important
The follow-up care is the most important part because changing your eating habits and old lifestyle is what leads to weight loss. If you really care about losing weight, then the follow-up care will be a breeze!
Myth #7: You can lose the weight without a drastic lifestyle change
If you are overweight like me, then your lifestyle probably wasn’t so healthy before. Of course you have to change your lifestyle if you want to change your body, which is something that I am prepared to do. I know it will be hard, but it is for my overall health and well-being. I have to keep thinking that everything will be better with a different lifestyle. I am trying to stay positive.
